Kevin Durant: Timeless Talent or Exploiter of an Era?

What if Kevin Durant played in the league during the early 90s?

Comparing eras in the NBA is tedious. Over the course of time, the league has evolved from a slow big-man brawl to a guard-dominant sprint to the 3 point line. So what would happen if we take superstar Kevin Durant — former MVP, 2x NBA Champion, 4x Scoring Champion — and teleport him to the early 90s of the NBA? Domination. Brutal, unfair domination.

On draft day Kevin Durant weighed as much as Karl Malone’s left bicep. NBA bigs such as David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Shaq, and the aforementioned Karl Malone dominated the league with their brute force and ”Curls get the girls…and championships” mentality. Throw the Slim Reaper, who infamously struggled to bench 185lbs during the draft combine, into the mix and things get interesting.

At first he’d get beat up, possibly even bullied. Players around the league would stamp the labels ”weak” and “small” over his name. But only at first.

“Size matters not.”

The wise words of a Jedi can only partially be applied to Durant’s 7ft guard-like frame. While outmatched by pure strength, Durant would use his combination of length and skill to SHOCK the league. At that point in time, the world had never seen a player with the size and skill of Kevin Durant. Durant’s speed and handle would be impossible for the bigs of the era to guard, while his length and high release would be almost pointless for guards to contest.

Domination.

Say what you want about Kevin Durant. Objectively speaking, he’s a baller, a bucket, and a student (possibly master) of the game, who just might have given His Airness a run for his money as the most skilled player the league had ever seen.

Transport KD to any era of the NBA, and he’d dominate. Because he’s Kevin Durant.

A timeless talent.
